The project

The main objective of the proposed project is the development and application of innovative technologies for the production of biomethane and hydrogen from agricultural and greenhouse residues and from olive mill wastewater (katsigaros) generated by olive-pomace mills. Based on an integrated value chain, the project includes the collection, mapping, analysis and evaluation of the yield of various substrates, with the aim of producing biogas and utilising it further.

The upgrading of biogas to high-purity biomethane will be based on Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology. The biomethane is then converted into hydrogen through innovative reforming processes. The technologies to be developed within the project are designed to maximise energy efficiency and minimise the environmental footprint of the processes.

A model for sustainable waste management and the promotion of green energy.

In addition, the project aims to develop a comprehensive business plan that will assess the commercial potential of the resulting products, ensuring the economic viability of the process.

  1. 01 · Substrates

Agricultural and greenhouse residues, olive mill wastewater

Collection, mapping, analysis and evaluation of the yield of various substrates, aimed at biogas production.

  2. 02 · Digestion

    Biogas CH₄ + CO₂

The digestion of the residues produces biogas, which is utilised further along the chain.

  3. 03 · Upgrading

    Pressure Swing Adsorption PSA

The upgrading of biogas to high-purity biomethane is based on PSA technology.

  4. 04 · Product

    High-purity biomethane CH₄

The first product of the chain — and the feedstock for the next step.

  5. 05 · Reforming

    Innovative reforming processes

Biomethane is converted into hydrogen through innovative reforming processes, designed to maximise energy efficiency and minimise the environmental footprint.

  6. 06 · Product

    Hydrogen H₂

Final hydrogen production is demonstrated at the pilot unit in Ierapetra.

  7. 07 · Back to the soil

    Soil improver

The digestion of the residues yields a soil improver to be used in agricultural crops, contributing to improved soil fertility.

Within the project, a pilot unit will be built at the industrial biogas plant in Ierapetra, Crete, owned by ECO HELLAS.

Demonstration activities of the proposed technologies will take place at the unit, from the upgrading of biogas to biomethane through to its final conversion into hydrogen.
